Description
1888 Orient ExpressIncredible archive. The papers of Charles Prunier, Paris relating to his journey by train on the Orient Express from Paris to Constantinople in 1888.Included are:An Orient Express folding sheet part printed in colors and dated 1888 which includes promotional material, the schedule, and the dining car menu. 11x14.5"The 8 course dinner, including two meat courses was 6 francs. In modern terms this would be about the same cost as a dinner at a Michelin 3 star restaurant. It could be accompanied by French, Austrian, or Hungarian wines. A 1878 Chateau Beychevelle was the same price, and a variety of classic champagnes were available at 14 francs. The ticket for the journey, stamped "Orient Express" , with recommended hotels on the verso. At an enormous price of 45 euros. Prunier's French passport, obtained just before leaving for Constantinople, 1888. 16.5x13"With customs stamps, etc from France and the Ottoman Empire. Prunier was 64 years old, 5'1" tall, and had a white beard.Prunier's Turkish visa, entirely in the Arabic based Ottoman Turkish alphabet. 16x11.5"The embossed color & gold business card of Constantin Trevizaki, guide and interpreter. The bill for Prunier's stay at the Hotel d"AnatolieWhere he stayed at full pension and had aperitifs - Chartreuse.Prunier's long and detailed bill for a stay at the legendary Grand Hotel in Constantinople, including several bottles of St. Julian [oh for a taste of that!] and more Chartreuse. An envelope & letter to Prunier from his nephew dated 1905. Not directly related, of course, but attesting to P."s long life. The letter & cover are actually quite interesting, & concern a visit to the International Exposition in Liege, Belgium in 1905.While we may never know the reason for Prunier's travels, the opening of the Orient Express line in 1883 led to vastly increased commercial relations.Until 1889 the journey beyond Belgrade involved a stretch with horse drawn carriages before reboarding a train for the final leg. A quite rare and remarkable archive from the very first years of the Orient Express.Items relating to this fabled train from before 1901 are virtually unobtainable.
