Description
I will not accept offers outside of eBay. If you'd like to make an offer lower than the Buy It Now price, please use the Make Offer button to submit your best offer. I will consider all reasonable offers received. ALL SALES FINAL. Please read the entire description and ask questions before placing your bid. You are bidding on a lot of eight personal letters written by famed Native American and Old West photographer D. F. Barry to my grandmother from August to November 1933. D. F. Barry was also known as Icastinyanka Cikala Hanzi (the Little Shadow Catcher). The letters are handwritten in pencil on his personalized stationary. Each letter has a corresponding stamped and postmarked envelope (8 letters, 8 envelopes). The D. F. Barry letters range from one page to five pages each for a total of 20 pages. Mr. Barry died on March 6, 1934; his 80th birthday. I'm also including two typewritten letters from Mr. Barry's brother written to my grandmother after D. F. Barry's death (see photos). Topics D. F. Barry writes about in the letters include his personal life, his photographs (including offers to sell photos to my grandmother--some as low as one dollar), and his personal memories and opinions of historical figures such as General Custer, Mrs. Custer, Chief Rain-in-the-Face, Sitting Bull, General Benteen, and others. A bit of family history that has been passed down through the years. My grandmother's father was a grain thief (he stole grain to feed his family) who was jailed with Sioux Chief Rain-in-the-Face at Fort Lincoln. Her father escaped Fort Lincoln with Rain-in-the-Face and was never seen again. My grandmother spent her adult life trying to find out what became of her father--even traveling to a fair (possibly the World's Fair) where she was able to talk to Rain-in-the-Face. Since D. F. Barry considered Rain-in-the-Face a friend, I believe my grandmother met and became friends with D. F. Barry while looking for information on her father. My grandmother died before I was born, so the family history information was passed to me by my father and aunts (all now deceased). The letters and envelopes are stored in acid-free archival sheet protectors inside a 3-ring notebook. I didn't remove the items from the sheet protectors when taking the pictures and you may notice glare in some of the photos. Only the first page of each letter is included in the photos. Also shown are two of the eight envelopes. If you'd like to review the content of all pages, I can e-mail a PDF copy with scanned black and white images of all pages. I received an online appraisal of the lot in November 2004 that valued the collection at $500 per letter. Auction open to U.S. bidders only. I will only accept payment via PayPal for this auction. Payment must be received via PayPal within 3 business days after end of auction or item will be relisted. Immediate payment is required on Buy it Now purchases. I will ship the package within two business days after payment is received. Buyer pays exact shipping cost (no handling fee). Insurance is optional but highly recommended. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions. ALL SALES FINAL. Please read the entire description and ask questions before placing your bid. (KEY WORDS: DF D.F.
